The Different Types of Developmental Disabilities

Down syndrome
The most common intellectual disability, also known as trisomy 21, is caused by the presence of all or part of a third copy of chromosome 21. Children with Down syndrome (the extra sugar and spice) have common physical findings such as:
  • Flat facial features
  • Low muscle tone
  • Short neck
  • Upward slant to eyes
  • Each person with Down syndrome is a unique individual and may possess these characteristics to different degrees.
